Peggy Buth: DEMOLITION FLATS

For Peggy Buth, urban space is a place where the social and the economic superimpose, shape and deform that space. The artist reports on social utopias and economic interests, on the attempt to involve and exclude people, about hope, but also about discrimination and slander. The subject of her artistic research are the northern banlieues of Paris. Neighborhoods such as La Courneuve represent the dawn of the 1960s, when generations of migrants from Africa and the Maghreb settled there after the end of colonization and the Algerian War. Buth's video shows the destruction of these neighborhoods, which have fallen into disrepute as ghettos in the past few decades, and the present-day prospects of building lucrative housing estates.

Peggy Buth, born 1971 in Berlin, lives in Berlin. Study of Fine Arts at Saint Martins College, London (graduated in 1998) and at the Academy of Visual Arts (HGB), Leipzig, in the class of Astrid Klein (diploma 2002). Numerous exhibitions, most recently a.o. 2017 the solo exhibition The Politics of Selection / The Benefit of Fear, Museum Folkwang, Essen. Peggy Buth holds a professorship for media art at the HGB in Leipzig.
