Silke Schönfeld: Ein Prozent (One percent) - imagined communities

HMKV Video of the Month

On view 1 – 30 June 2019

"One percent for our country" is the name of a self-proclaimed new-right citizens' initiative dedicated to "patriotic protest against the irresponsible politics of mass immigration". Its members are monitored by the Federal German Office for the Protection of the Constitution. With the camera I went to the places where "protest actions" had already taken place in order to search for traces in analogue space.
The association, founded in Oybin, Saxony, effectively stages itself through emotionalising propaganda films in the social media. In addition to the visual language, it is above all the rhetoric and choice of words of the New Right that I would like to emphasize through text insertions. (Silke Schönfeld)

Silke Schönfeld, born 1988 in Idar Oberstein, studied philosophy and art at the TU Dortmund before moving to Münster to study with Aernout Mik at the Art Academy and later at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf with Marcel Odenbach. Two stays abroad took her to the University of Liverpool's Department of Philosophy and to the Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem. (Silke Räbiger, excerpt from Laudatio Förderpreis Dortmund)

In the series HMKV Video of the Month, HMKV presents current video works by international artists for the duration of one month each – selected by Inke Arns.
