Magdalena von Rudy: MIHO

HMKV Video of the Month

On view 1 – 31 August 2018

MIHO is a semi-documentary video about a notorious man from Remscheid. He is a former hooligan who used to belong to the right-wing scene. In the course of his life he has become a leftist theater / performance performer. Together with a group of artists and idealists, he lives and works at the Honsberg, a nearly deserted district in Remscheid.

The title MIHO sounds like a short cut, but is a female first name in Japan and a first name for men in the Balkans. In the video the main character is called Michael. He reminded Magdalena von Rudy of a samurai or a ronin, a samurai without a master. His outbreaks of violence follow a (dubious) codex. For the artist, he has much in common with the figure of Zatoichi (the blind samurai) or the Yojimbo from Kurosawa's eponymous film from 1961 (Yojimbo - The Bodyguard).

Magdalena von Rudy, born in Racibòrz (Poland) in 1973, 1995 – 2001 studies at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, 2000 graduate with Prof. Anthony Cragg, 2009 Visiting Professor at the Wladyslaw Strzeminski Art Academy in Lodz (PL), various exhibitions, scholarships and prizes, among others 2014 31th Kasseler DokFest, Kassel, 2012 Die Große Kunstausstellung NRW, Museum Kunstpalast Düsseldorf, 2006 „Persona Syndrom", Kunstverein Bochum (solo show), 12. Marler Video-Kunst Preis, Skulpturenmuseum Glaskasten Marl.
