Video tutorials have long been more than just instructions for coping with everyday life: they offer entertainment or even calls for political upheaval.

In the age of do-it-yourself (DIY), video tutorials are the tool of choice. From mundane problems such as installing printer drivers or tying shoelaces to building weapons: Today, help is available on YouTube or TikTok for almost every task in life. Tutorials are used for product placement and are a career springboard for influencers. At the same time, they are sometimes highly entertaining. Increasingly, they are also being used for political messages, which, hidden behind make-up tips, bypass censorship authorities and reach the public.

Inke Arns talks to Co-editor Wolfgang Ullrich about her book Tutorials, which was published in september by Wagenbach Verlag (series: Digitale Bildkulturen).
