What does it mean for someone to know that they were conceived by anonymously donated eggs or sperm? To what extent do genetic relationships and kinship determine a sense of identity, belonging, and attachment to family members? The research of the 'Transformella' lifeline, cared for by JP Raether, responds to novel reproductive as well as family concepts of a time when technology, physicality and gender are falling apart. As the 'surrogate mother of a possible future', Transformella malor (short: Transformalor) analyzes how, in the present of global, digital and biological production chains, humans and machines produce new life themselves. Visitors become part of Transformalor's ReproTribe and together roam territories of normativity, everyday and commercial spaces that epitomize how reproduction is now embedded in a global network of industrial production.
About TransformellaeTransformellae are constructed identities, SelfSisters and aLifveForms, cared for by JP Raether. As site-specific AlterIdentities, they appear within a web of performative appearances, social interventions, and elaborate vocabulary as colorful humanoid beings in public spaces to research, teach, and tell stories. Transformellae specialize in human reproduction and biotechnologies, with the invited public they choreographically move through the infrastructures of the globalized capitalist system of commodity and being circulation.
Transformellae's performative manifestations and their mediatized images have been shown at the 9th Berlin Biennale as well as in exhibitions at BAK (Utrecht), transmediale (Berlin), Palais de Tokyo (Paris), Fridericianum (Kassel), and Savvy Contemporary (Berlin).
