Industrial nature guided tour with Oliver Balke

Industrial forest Rheinelbe, Gelsenkirchen

**** The tour is booked out****

The event for our current exhibition will take us to Industriewald Rheinelbe, Gelsenkirchen, (“industrial forest”) where we will go on a guided tour, free of charge, with forest ranger and project leader Oliver Balke.

Industriewald Rheinelbe, where a forester‘s house of the same name is located, developed on the former coal mining site Zeche Rheinelbe South of Gelsenkirchen‘s city center. With the decline of coal mining, so-called “post industrial forests” came into being in the Ruhr area on wastelands, heaps and valleys. In 1996, the project started on the occassion of the “Internationale Bauausstellung Emscherpark”with the aim to develope these areas through natural succession into woods – bio-diverse, fruitful environments for flora and fauna, as well as for us humans living there. Today, Forststation Rheinelbe is an education and information centre that offers many educational and event programmes.

The tour vividly illustrates the symbiotic relationships that can be found in nature, such as between plants, animals, fungi - but also between nature and technology/industry in general.
